Owner-coaching is definitely the harder piece. The dogs are easy! Owners are helped to become aware of how they unknowingly reinforce undesirable behaviors by petting or praising a dog after it does something naughty. If you don’t want the dog to jump into your lap, don’t pet him once he gets there! So they learn four ways to not reinforce a dog’s behavior.

And of course an owner’s timing must be impeccable for reinforcing a desired behavior with a marker and a reward. Another learning piece!

And lastly, owners must learn how to train each obedience behavior.

A dog trainer may appear to have magical skills but they really don’t. They are simply 100% consistent with the dog when withholding and dispensing reinforcement. The trainer is only with the dog for an hour. The poor owner has the other 23!
